Preparation

God has chosen you for this event. Everything you need for your role in this mission has already been deposited into your heart by your good Father. We invite you to release all pressure and expectation. All we ask is that you show up with an engaged heart, present to God, your own heart, and the hearts of the men. That said, these few action steps would be immensely beneficial for you and your heart preparation.

The weekly preparation averages around 20 minutes a day for six days a week of focused attention on your masculine soul. It is our hope that this daily preparation will till the soil of your soul so you are ready to offer and receive the full portion of what God has at the event.

  • Assignment:
    1. Don’t come in empty. Protect margin to put some nourishment from God in your tank before you arrive.
    2. Set aside some time for this reflection exercise. Put yourself back in the shoes of the younger men who will be attending, and remember. Remember the journey so you can offer and they might be able to lean in to the miles you’ve traveled.
    • Where were you in this stage of life (late 20s – early 40s…young kids, young marriage, young career)?
    • What are the pitfalls of that stage of life?
    • If you could rewrite that decade of your life, what would you do differently?
    • What decisions did you make back then that you’re most thankful for now?
    • What do you wish a father had offered you in this stage of your masculine initiation?

Three Important Details

  1. Chimney Sweep

Dallas Willard once said, “The most important thing about a man is not what he does. It is who he becomes.” As men, we have so few opportunities to talk about who we are apart from what we do. At the Intensive, we are committed to flipping this script and centering the entire experience around who we are. To this end, we agree to not disclose what we “do” for a living. Instead, for the duration of the retreat, we stack hands on one answer to the question of “What do you do?” Our shared answer is simply “I’m a chimney sweep.” If you need to talk about your “work” at any time, simply refer to it as chimney sweeping.

  2. Technology-Free Zone

When in your life do you get permission to unplug for four days and allow God and your masculine soul to be the centerpiece of your attention? In order to create the best possible environment for this mission, the Intensive is a technology-free zone. All phones and digital devices will be collected and safely stored at the event. Get ready, it just might be one of the hardest and best moments of your life. We will not be making any exceptions to this rule.

Bring a watch/alarm clock, as your phone will not be available.

Internet and phone service will not be available for the entire event, so please give the phone number below to anyone who might need to reach you. You can be reached 24 hours a day in the event of an emergency at (719) 445-9020. Please provide that number to your family.

  3. Bestowing Gifts

One of the guiding values of the Intensive since its inception is the deep generosity of the Father expressed toward the participants. We make every effort to model that in many expressions throughout the mission. At this 2022 Intensive, we are introducing an additional expression, modeled by some of our closest allies in this work. We want to invite you, as leaders, to ask the Father if he has some sort of gift he may want you to bring to bestow on a participant who is attending. It's a creative opportunity to pray and simply respond if and how you are led. It's not a requirement, simply an invitation. God is inviting each man to recover the path and process of masculine initiation set out before him. You have a unique role, and you have ears to hear and a heart to participate in what the Father is doing. I invite you to begin asking if God might have a  gift He wants you to bring to participate in fueling this atmosphere of generosity.  Please walk with God.  If he He says, "don't bring anything," please don't.  We truly want this to be Spirit led and zero pressure.

What to Bring

We’re in the mountains at high altitude. It can be 80 degrees and sunny then snowing on the same day. Bring casual clothing and good boots for hiking. Rain gear and a good cold-weather layer, especially for evening campfires. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. Bedding and towels will be provided; however, you will need to bring your own toiletries. Bring a watch and alarm clock.

Questions

If you have any logistical questions about the Intensive, please contact our Events team at [email protected].

Schedule

You will need to arrive at Trail West between 4:00 and 5:00 pm on Wednesday, August 24. Please do not arrive late. We will conclude by 1:00 pm on Sunday, August 28. It is ESSENTIAL that you plan your travel so as NOT to leave early—you will not want to miss the conclusion of the retreat.

Finally

Remember, the most important thing you can bring is your heart, present to God, to your own life, and to the men. Ask the Father what your heart needs in preparation, and prioritize time to receive nourishment, care, and provision from God in the days leading up to this event.

I could not be more honored and more grateful for your participation as part of our leadership team.

Strength and Honor,

Morgan
