When we turn in prayer to God for union despite our emotional state or physical circumstances, these are the times that undo the heart of the King of Heaven (Song of Songs 4:9).
Those holy moments are as simple as a turning of your heart toward God and saying, “I long to be one with You in the midst of this painful season. I need You. I want to be one with You just as You want to be one with me. I invite You in here. Here in the middle of my pain. I love You from here.” It is by choosing to believe, no matter what, that you have been purchased by the precious blood of Jesus and that you are His prized possession, the joy of His heart, that you will find Him. Even when you can’t feel Him, He is holding on to you.
We need union with God. We are created for it. Union with God is the way to heal a lack of attachment, connection, and bonding. Union with God is essential belonging. It is the soul coming Home. We give ourselves to union with God every day so that we might receive the connection and belonging and nourishment that we need.

Sarah too belonged to God— even through years of not seeing, of not feeling seen, of being treated as incidental, disposable, dispensable, of failing, of falling back on her own resources, and of not trusting God. She still belonged. You still belong. No matter what.
Sarah was blessed. She is known as the Ancestress of Israel. She is called by God the mother of nations. She is referred to four more times in the Scriptures as one we should look to and emulate. She is honored and esteemed. God understood her humanity, and He understands yours.
As we walk through this Valley of the Shadow of Death, we too are waiting for the promise to be completely fulfilled. We are Abraham. We are Sarah. We too have been renamed. We are Sought After. We are children of God. And we are the ones living in a land not our own. Sarah and Abraham wandered all their lives, never even owning land; in fact, the first land they owned was Sarah’s burial place.
Sometimes we feel like we are wandering.
That is because we are. We too are strangers in a strange land (1 Peter 2:11). This is not our home. We don’t belong to the world. But we do belong to God, and we are made to live in union with Him— meaning that we can experience Him in the depths of our being and trust in His loyal and consistent love that is always closer than our breath. We relish His mirroring gaze. We are secure in our immovable, untouchable, indestructible attachment to Him.
