Group Study – What resources do I need to buy to start a group study?

WILD AT HEART – BAND OF BROTHERS

We would recommend each person have for the Band of Brothers study series:
Wild at Heart book
Band of Brother's Participant Guide
Band of Brothers DVD series

The ideal approach would be to have each man read the corresponding chapter in Wild at Heart, and do the work in the Participants Guide before you meet. The Participant's Guide contains about 120 pages of questions, ideas to discuss and prayers to be used. When your group gathers, you can watch the video series for the week and discuss. The video series is presented in eight parts--each about 35 minutes long. You could do this study in eight weeks, or, because the content is prone to generate good discussion, and the leader may be inspired to throw in some other movie clips or linger on specific sections, it could easily last longer. And there are several other ideas for the logistics of leading a group listed in the facilitator's guide that comes with the Band of Brothers DVD.

The Field Manual is a lengthier text with more questions to process and places to explore with God than the Participants Guide. Designed for personal use as a companion to the book Wild at heart, it guides you through deeper, further study than most groups have time for.

CAPTIVATING

For the Captivating study, we recommend:
Captivating, book
Captivating Heart to Heart Study Guide
Captivating Heart to Heart DVD series

The DVD set includes:
• DVD's
• CD-Rom with Facilitator's Guide and Promotional Materials

The Captivating: Heart to Heart - a Study Guide was developed to be used with the DVD series Captivating Heart to Heart, and as a companion for book Captivating. There are twelve chapters in the book, ten chapters in the DVD series, and ten chapters in the study guide. To get the most out of the experience, we suggest you read Captivating in full before beginning. Then, as you do your weekly study, reread the appropriate chapter(s) before answering the questions in the corresponding chapters of the study guide. All this to say, you may choose to be more creative and use the study and book together or a different combination of the resources. The Study Guide has 59 pages and on average there are about 6 pages of questions per week. (although the book is 6"x8", so it's not an overwhelming amount of work) The Facilitator's Guide suggests allowing about 2 hours for each meeting.

The Guided Journal is also available, a lengthier text with more questions to process and places to explore with God than the Study Guide. Designed for personal use as a companion to the book Captivating, it guides you through deeper, further study than most groups have time for.

FATHERED BY GOD

With the Fathered By God series we do recommend each person have:
Fathered By God book
Fathered By God Participant Guide
Fathered By God DVD series

The ideal approach would be to have each man read the corresponding chapter in Fathered By God, and do the work in the Participants Guide before you meet. The Participant's Guide contains about 125 pages, containing questions and ideas to discuss, as well as prayers to be used. When your group gathers, you can watch the video series for the week and discuss. The video series is presented in eight parts--each about 25 minutes long. You could do this study in eight weeks, or, because the content is prone to generate good discussion, and the leader may be inspired to linger on specific sections, it could easily last longer.

LOVE & WAR

It is recommended that for the Love & War study, everyone have:
Love & War book
Love & War Participant’s Guide
Love & War DVD series

Here is an excerpt taken from the Leader's Guide to explain more about the format of the study:

"Make sure that everyone in your group has a copy of the book Love and War and a participant’s guide. It works best if you can get books and guides to your group before your first meeting. That way, folks can read the first two chapters and be ready to watch the first video session together. The participant’s guide instructs folks to read the corresponding chapter(s) in Love and War and to answer a few questions in the guide before the group meets. You’ll want to do that yourself! Also, look over the guidance offered here for each session so you know where you are headed.

This series is presented in eight video sessions, each about twenty-five minutes in length. Each week, you’ll meet together for an hour and a half or two to watch the video and discuss the session. This series can also be used in classroom settings, such as Sunday school classes, though you may need to modify the discussion time depending on the size of the class. You could even use the video as the sessions for a marriage retreat! Each week you and your group will: Read the corresponding chapter(s) in Love and War; Answer a few questions in the Participant’s Guide; Watch one of the video sessions together; Talk about it."

WAKING THE DEAD

We recommend having each person in the group purchase the:
Waking the Dead book
Waking the Dead Guidebook

The guidebook is not a requirement. The study could be more casual and conversational, where the leader has the guidebook and takes questions to run each group session. But, we believe people will get more out of the study if they have the Guidebook and walk with God through the questions each week.

Here is a blurb from the Waking the Dead Guidebook that explains everything best:

“A few words of counsel on using this guidebook. First (pardon the obvious), you need to read the corresponding chapter in Waking the Dead before you jump into the guidebook. For this only makes sense in light of that. Second, take your time. There’s no rush. Don’t force this into a tight format or program. Third, we encourage you to pray before you read, and do the work we’ve laid out here. …”

WALKING WITH GOD

We strongly recommend having each person in the group purchase the:
DVD Series
Walking with God book
Walking with God Guidebook

The guidebook is to accommodate the study -- or the audio book if they prefer. This is not a requirement. The study could be more casual and conversational, but we believe people will get more out of the study if they have the book. The leader may then assign the group to read the corresponding section the week ahead to be ready to discuss. If you want your group to also be using our A Personal Guide to Walking with God for personal reflection/taking the study deeper that is a great idea, too. Depending on the intimacy of your group, you may/may not have the group share from this study.

Here is a blurb from the Walking With God DVD Study that explains everything best:

“The video sessions are each about ten minutes long, and you’ll want to allow at least forty-five minutes to an hour for discussion. Each DVD segment covers, in broad strokes, one of the significant entries in the Walking with God book. During the week, group members should read the entries from the book that correspond with the video discussion. These are noted at the beginning of each chapter in this study guide. The best plan would be for everyone to read the book entirely in the first few weeks of your time together. Then, week by week, watch the video segment together at the beginning of your meeting and discuss the questions addressed in the video”
