The Shepherd and the Lamb

Jesus is both the Shepherd and, as Revelation 13:8 reminds us, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world. John the Baptist declared, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29). As a lamb, Jesus understands us completely. He knows intimately what it is to be a sheep living in this uncertain and often dangerous world where our choices matter profoundly. He is acquainted with what walking as a human being on this earth entails. He knows precisely what a sheep needs from its shepherd. He knows, as well, the ultimate sacrifice He must make to save His flock.
Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11). This is His magnificent splendor. This is the supreme excellence of all realities. This saving truth stands high above all other truths.
God Himself in Himself provides all that we need. His care for us is sure. He promises to lead us faithfully, as He alone knows the safe passages. So with utter assurance we can lean in to Him, trusting His good heart, following closely just like beloved sheep trust their shepherd.
Jesus is our North Star. He is our guiding light. He is our Good Shepherd. And He is always leading us safely through every season, be they seasons of trials and travails, rest and refreshment, or danger and grief— to our True Home.
Our Jesus, the King of the Ages, the Lamb of God who left His throne to come and seek and save all that was lost, has returned to His rightful place. He is seated in victory and bears all authority over every seen and unseen thing.
“The Lamb in the center of the throne will be their shepherd. He will lead them to streams of life- giving water, and God will wipe all tears from their eyes” (Revelation 7:17 cev). The call on our lives now is to follow closely and come to know our Good Shepherd. It is in knowing Him that we come to trust Him.
