Our Good Shepherd

From Genesis to Revelation, Jesus is described as the Good Shepherd. He is your Good Shepherd. Shepherding is not what Jesus does, it is who He is. Let’s explore this beautiful analogy.

Sheep know their shepherd’s care from their long history of his faithfulness. They rest in their shepherd’s trustworthy provision that he has proven to them time and time again. So can we. Think back on God’s faithfulness throughout the story of your own life for a moment. Take a couple of minutes. The truth is, He has carried you far and through many things.

Sheep follow their shepherd closely, just as we are meant to follow Jesus. He calls to us, “Come close. Come closer still.” It is our honor and delight to do so. But what happens if the sheep wander off? What if life knocks them off balance and they are flat on their backs and literally unable to get up? What if they fall into a crevice or a ravine or simply get lost? What if they get badly hurt?

The shepherd comes. He leaves the ninety- nine to find the one. He is the rescuer, the healer, the savior, the one committed to the sheep. Jesus is the One committed to you. You are never out of His reach or out of His thoughts. Jesus finds His lost sheep, tenderly picks it up, tucks it under the folds of His cloak, and carries the frightened one against His reassuring chest. Safe now in its shepherd’s care, the sheep rests. We can rest.
