A Loving Father

J. I. Packer writes, “To those who are Christ’s, the holy God is a loving Father; they belong to his family; they may approach him without fear and always be sure of his fatherly concern and care. This is the heart of the New Testament message.”

That God the Father has made Himself God our Father means that He is personally, emotionally, and sacrificially involved with us.

An infant may first look for its mother’s face and recognize her voice above all others, but as for many babies, my son’s first word was “Da Da.” An ease of the tongue, perhaps. But might it also point to something else that resides within? The human soul is meant to live within the safety and blessed confines of the love of a father. Because of how God created the universe, the father-child relationship is the deepest in the cosmos. As I previously mentioned, it is from Him that we learn who we are, and it is through Him that the most important questions of our hearts are answered.

We have earthly fathers who gave us their answers, and we have a heavenly Father that either concurs with them or overrules them. He alone is our true Father. He alone has the right to tell us who we are.

Jesus came and lived and died so that we could have a family relationship with God— so that we can call God “Father.” He is, in fact, the way to the Father. “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1).
