Swinging at a Piñata

May 24, 2024

The book “Killing Lions” is a conversation between John and Sam Eldredge about the trials young men face.

[Sam]  When we moved into our first place, Susie started having some intense nightmares, something that isn’t common for her. After a couple of nights of this, we figured praying against it couldn’t hurt, so we tried it. I felt like an idiot at first, speaking out loud and commanding things to leave. I imagined myself as the blindfolded kid swinging at a piñata. But then the craziest thing happened: she stopped having nightmares.

[John]   Exactly. You gave that thing a good, solid whack and the result was wonderful — no more nightmares. This is enormously practical. We aren’t speculating on theological nuances; we are trying to protect those we love, find the guidance we need, fight for our dreams, bring some genuine relief to the suffering in this world. Not only does Christianity provide the clearest and truest explanation for evil, it also provides us with weapons to fight it and see genuine results. This was absolutely central to Jesus’ worldview. He neither obsessed over the presence of an enemy nor did he ignore it; he directly dealt with it when he needed to and then moved on.
