Henry Varley once said, “The world has yet to see what God will do with and for and through and in and by the man who is fully consecrated to him.”
Though every generation faces unprecedented challenges, every generation also experiences unprecedented opportunities to recover the path to life. Jesus promises that our Good Father is winsomely at work. As we respond to his radical invitation to travel together on this ancient path of becoming, we too can become the kind of kings who so trust and rely on an interactive life that we astonish the heart of God.
(Study guide pages 180-181)
- Jesus says he does nothing apart from the Father. Where and how do you observe this dependency operating in his life?
- By comparison, how much of your day-to-day life is lived in strength through dependency? If you were to describe your actual relationship to God, what words would you use to describe the quality, frequency, and level of relating? How much would you use the words authentic, vulnerable, and intimate in association with your life in God?
- Who would you love to be in a decade? Describe that man.
Jesus was astonished when he heard this and said to those who were following him, “He has greater faith than anyone I’ve encountered in Israel!”
Matthew 8:10 TPT
One of the foundational beliefs of this message is that God is the initiator and we are simply invited to respond and participate. In each session, you’re invited to choose a two-minute pause to let the message soak into your soul, let questions arise, and let God shine his light.
God, I invite you into this space to participate in stillness with you. Here and now I choose to recover my breath. I turn my attention and affection to you, God, and what you have prepared for me in this time. I choose two minutes to breathe and center in you.

Watch the film Gladiator. Consider Maximus. What do you love about him? What parts of his story do you resonate with? To whose authority are you consenting?
Friends, well done! Very few men have the courage and grit to travel this far. You are among the few.
And all this was prologue.
Becoming a King, in the form of the video, the book, and the study guide, is intended to be an invitation into a decade. The best things are cultivated over time. Mark it on your calendar. Live by day and measure by the decade. If you consent to the process, a decade from now you will be teaching and offering to others from the very place of your greatest struggle.
Take a deeper pass through the message of Becoming a King with a group of men. It’s more than a book, video, and study guide. It’s a way of life that leads to ever-increasing maturity, wholeheartedness, and union with God. Facilitate a Becoming a King group online or in-person, or offer a weekend retreat. Offering what you are receiving is one of the greatest catalysts for masculine transformation. Choose courage and vulnerability. Go out and change the world.
Pray the Become Good Soil Prayer at the end of Becoming a King.
