The Fullness of God's Glory

Let’s look into the Glory of God for a moment, the Glory that also protects us. “Glory” is a word that needs reclaiming, like “mystic.” If you were to ask most church folk what is meant by the Glory of God, they would probably say it is the praise that is due to God or, if they are Bible-study types, they might say it is “the weightiness” of God.

Both are true; both are inadequate. How did Saint Paul see the Glory of God? Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father (Romans 6:4).

A mighty, mighty power was at work to raise Jesus Christ bodily from the grave, whole and unconquerable forevermore. The preposition “through” is the Greek dia; it means “on account of, because of.” Christ’s resurrection from the dead was through and because of the glory of God; it displays the full power, beauty, worth, significance, and reputation of God, and it was the power, beauty, worth, significance, and reputation of God that did something so utterly unprecedented.

Glory.

The Glory of God is the full potency of God, the manifestation of his greatness, character, and power. The Glory of God is also his manifest Presence, for it was the Glory of God that filled the tabernacle and the temple:

When Solomon finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the LORD filled the temple. The priests could not enter the temple of the LORD because the glory of the LORD filled it. When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the LORD above the temple, they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave thanks to the Lord, saying,

“He is good; his love endures forever.” (2 Chronicles 7:1–3)

What filled the temple? The manifest Presence of God. God himself; his potency.
