Stasi Eldredge's book "Free to Be Me" helps teen girls become the young women God created them to be.

There’s a reason they made a movie with the title Mean Girls. It’s because girls can be vicious. They can bully. Ann Shoket, editor-in-chief of Seventeen magazine, said girls are adept at ripping apart the social fabric of other girls’ lives. Girls can “ice” each other out in their insecure need to feel they are above another girl. Girls bully other girls by getting someone “out” socially and getting others on “their side.” They use Facebook groups or Formspring to bully someone anonymously. The effect is both powerful and cruel.

You know the saying “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me” is a flagrant lie. Words wound. Proverbs 18:21 says, “The tongue has the power of life and death,” and don’t we know it? We are female. We use words. So does God. He is the Word. We are meant to follow his lead and use our words to bless and encourage and bring life.

We can do that! How exciting to think that we can partner with the Holy Spirit in creating little islands of hope and kindness and faithful friends amid the sea of unkindness that too many girls experience.
